Alginate Raft Technology

The reflux solution that leaves acid production alone.

Reflux Shield forms a physical gel raft that blocks reflux for 2-4 hours. No dependency. No rebound effect. Backed by 25 years of clinical research.

Two Tools, Two Mechanisms. How antacids and alginate solve different problems.

Which One Are You?

Most people dealing with reflux are using one of three tools. None of them solve the actual problem.

Tool One

The Tums Cycle

You take a Tums after dinner. The burning fades for an hour. Then it's back. So you take another. And another. Years go by. Then someone tells you that calcium carbonate antacids actually trigger your stomach to make MORE acid (rebound hypersecretion, first documented in NEJM in 1968).

Tool Two

The PPI Trap

Your doctor prescribed omeprazole years ago. It worked. Then you tried to stop and felt worse than before, so you stayed on it. What you weren't told: PPI withdrawal causes rebound acid hypersecretion. People who never had reflux develop reflux symptoms after stopping a PPI (Reimer 2009, Gastroenterology). The treatment created the dependency.

Tool Three

The Lifestyle Compromise

You've cut out spicy food, alcohol, coffee, citrus, chocolate, mint, tomatoes, late meals, and tight clothing. You sleep with three pillows. And you still wake up with reflux. Because the actual mechanism (acid escaping upward at the gastroesophageal junction) hasn't been addressed.

The Mechanism

It's called an alginate raft.

Sodium alginate is a polysaccharide extracted from brown seaweed. When it hits stomach acid, it converts to a gel within seconds. The gel cross-links with calcium ions and gets buoyed by trapped CO2. It floats to the top of your stomach contents and forms a physical barrier at the gastroesophageal junction. That's where reflux events happen.

Your stomach acid stays exactly where it should be, doing its job on your food. But it can no longer splash up into your esophagus. The raft persists for 2 to 4 hours, then breaks down naturally as digestion proceeds.

This isn't a drug. It isn't an antacid. It doesn't shut down acid production. It's a mechanical barrier. Different category entirely.

Patients on alginate compared to antacid alone in the Rohof 2013 scintigraphy study. The raft was radiolabeled and watched on imaging.

Peer-Reviewed Research

The evidence base goes back 25 years.

Reflux Shield

The clean-label alginate formulation built around what the science actually says matters.

What's in the bottle

Reflux Shield includes

  • Sodium alginate The active ingredient that forms the raft
  • Calcium carbonate Cross-links the alginate gel for durability
  • Sodium bicarbonate Generates CO2 for buoyancy
  • Natural cheesecake flavor Because compliance matters

What we left out

Reflux Shield doesn't include

  • Artificial dyes (no titanium dioxide, no FD&C colors)
  • High-fructose corn syrup
  • Artificial sweeteners (no sucralose, aspartame, acesulfame potassium)
  • Parabens or preservatives
  • Animal-derived ingredients

Why We Built This

From a son and a co-founder, both watching reflux up close.

My dad bought Rolaids by the case. I remember it from when I was a kid. Boxes of them in the cabinet. He took them constantly. We all just thought that's what people did when they got heartburn. He passed in 2019 from stage IV esophageal cancer.

A few years later, my co-founder Zack and I were working together when his reflux started shaping his daily life. He's 32. He was looking for something better than the gas station playbook everyone defaults to. The more we both went deep on the research, the more we realized how much my dad probably never got told.

Reflux Shield is what we built. Clean ingredients, real mechanism, no compromises. The kind of product we wish had been on the shelf 30 years ago.

How To Use Reflux Shield

One teaspoon. After meals. Before bed.

After your biggest meal

Take 1 teaspoon. The raft forms within 2 to 3 minutes and protects through the digestive window when reflux is most likely.

Before bed

Take 1 teaspoon. The barrier protects through the night when reflux is most damaging and least noticed.

As needed

Some people take additional doses after lunch or before triggering meals. Adjust to your situation.

Compatibility with other reflux treatments

Reflux Shield works alongside other reflux treatments. If you're on a PPI, take Reflux Shield 30 minutes before or after your PPI dose. If you're on an antacid, you can use them together. If you're tapering off long-term acid suppression, talk to your doctor about whether Reflux Shield can support that transition (Vales 2023 showed it can).
